About the Authors

Catherine J. Petersen is an international consultant and principal of C J Petersen & Associates, LLC. This consulting and training practice is both national and international in scope. Training is focused on international commercial documentation and regulations and letters of credit. Research is conducted on freight transportation, both domestic and international.

Ms. Petersen has written many published articles. She was a freight forwarder and ocean carrier representative for 12 years, and has been active in the international area since 1980. She holds both graduate and undergraduate degrees (conferred in 1976 and 1974, respectively) from Mankato State University in Minnesota. She was licensed as a U.S. Customs House Broker by U.S. Customs and Border Protection in 2005, and is a member of the International Trade Advisory Committee on Customs Matters and Trade Facilitation (ITAC 14).

Brent WM. Primus, J.D. is the C.E.O. of Primus Law Office, P.A.  He graduated from Lawrence University in 1968, spent two years with the American Peace Corps as an agricultural extension agent in rural India and returned to attend the University of Minnesota Law School, receiving his Juris Doctorate in 1973.  Since then he has represented clients in a wide variety of legal matters, with an emphasis on transportation issues.

Brent was the recipient of the Transportation Lawyer of the Year award in 1996, is the editor of Freight Claims in Plain English, Fourth Edition, published in 2009 and is a regular contributing author to various trade publications, including Parcel and Logistics Management.  He frequently lectures and presents seminars to local and national organizations on litigation and transportation law topics.

George W. John Novak joined Bremer Bank N.A., Minneapolis, Minnesota as Vice President and Manager of International Department in December, 2004. John currently has responsibility for sales, marketing, training and consulting of all International services. Mr. Novak has more than 44 years of International finance and International banking experience that included working for Citibank in NYC, National City Bank, Cleveland, Ohio [now PNC] and U.S. Bank Minneapolis, MN. While at these banks, he managed and provided support for International operations and promoted sales.

Mr. Novak’s background, before coming to Bremer Bank, included nearly seven years of corporate credit management experience at Polaris Industries Inc., managing a $35 million dollar International portfolio for over 50 worldwide foreign distributors.

In addition, John is a member of the Minnesota District Export Council [MN DEC] and the North Dakota District Export Council [ND DEC]. John is currently serving as a member of the Board of Directors Board of Director of the Midwest Global Trade Association [MGTA] and currently serving on its Education and Special Events Committees. He was also past President of the MGTA. John is also serving as the Chair of the International Trade Advisory Council at St. Paul College, St. Paul, MN. This council supports curriculum and educational opportunities for its students.
